4 Tips For Ensuring Your Dental Implants Last Long-Term

Posted on: 8 June 2016

When you decide to have dental implant surgery, you definitely want to be sure that it is long lasting. Dental implants are the most expensive option for replacement teeth, which is why long-term success is even more important. Here are four tips to consider:

  1. Brush and Clean Implants Just Like Natural Teeth: When you have dental implants, they have to be brushed and cleaned just like your regular teeth. This also means flossing between the implants, as well. If there is bacteria that builds up in the space between the implant and the gums, then gum disease can easily be developed. Eventually, the inflammation of the gums caused by gum disease will force the implant out of place.
  2. Be Gentle: What many people don't realize is that dental implants are just as fragile as your regular teeth. Just because they are not your natural teeth does not mean they are not vulnerable to damage. If you bite too hard and are injured, the implant can easily fall out or at least become loose. This is why it's important to never attempt to open bottles or bags with your teeth.
  3. Visit Your Dentist Every 6 Months: Visiting your dentist every 6 months is something that you should be doing anyway. However, it's even more important once you have dental implants. Dental implants need to be checked for stability. If there are any problems, they will be treated and adjusted right away to avoid the potential problem of the implant falling out altogether. If you miss any appointments, you are vulnerable to encountering major problems with your implants that could have otherwise been prevented.
  4. Follow Post-Operative Instructions:  After you have the dental implant surgery, it's important to follow the post-operative instructions your dentist provides. These instructions will be designed specifically for you to ensure that the dental implants successfully fuse to the bone. Since there is a chance that the implant is rejected by your mouth within the first few days, you definitely want to take these instructions seriously in order to avoid that.

When you follow these four tips for long-term dental implant success, you can be sure that you are more likely going to be able to keep your implants for a lifetime. You should definitely take these tips seriously, especially since the surgery is so invasive and expensive. Because of this, it's even more important that it is successful, then it will have all been worth it.
